The adminitrative division form of Haidong is Municipality, which is one of the four administrative divisional forms at the the second level of China local administrative division system . Municipality is also referred to as a prefecture level city (地级市). Most of Chinese big cities belong to this variety. Haidong is Located to the northeast of Qinghai Province, the intermediate zone between Xining and Lanzhou. To the east, it borders with Tianzhu, Yongdeng, Lanzhou, Yongjing, Linxia and Gannan in Gansu Province. It wins its name from it location, on the east bank of Qinghai Lake. With a total area of 17,010 square kilometers and the population of over 2,130,000, Haidong is an important agricultural economy region in Qinghai Province.
