Dujiangyan Overview
Located at the mountainous watershed of Minjiang River in the northwest of Chengdu Plain, Dujiangyan City is the only water conservation place for the Chengdu Plain. Covering an area of 1207 square kilometers with the urban space of 22 square kilometers, it has 19 towns and one industrial development zone, and it’s only 39 kilometers away from Chengdu City and 40 minutes’ drive to Shuangliu International Airport. Dujiangyan is the hometown of longevity with a total population of 630,000 and urban population of 230,000. Under the guidance of Li Bing, the Governor of Shu Prefecture ( the former Sichuan) of the Qin State, the local people built the water conservancy project ----- the Dujiangyan Irrigation System 2263 years ago, which prevents Chengdu Plain from flood. It made the Chengdu Plain a “Land of Abundance”, and naturally Dujiangyan City is reputed as the “Source of the Land of Abundance”.
Situated in an ecological transition zone with the biodiversity, Dujiangyan city is rich of animal and plant resources, with 14,000 species, including Giant Panda, golden monkey and dove tree. So Dujiangyan City is also regarded as “The World’s Natural Botanical Garden” and “The Gene Treasure of Wild and Rare Animals”. Besides, it is abundant in minerals and water resources with about 1,300,000 kilowatt hydropower storage. Here, the annual average temperature is 15.2℃ and the rainfall is about 1,200 millimeters, which make the city enjoy the best atmospheric environment in the west Sichuan Plain. The quality of the atmosphere and water always stands at the first national level. The altitude differs from 4580 meters to 500 meters which creates the great difference of climate and species diversities. The forest coverage rate is 60% for the whole city and 40.4% for the urban place, which provides Chengdu the most important ecological barrier. Meanwhile, the city has been honored as the “Natural Oxygen Bar” and “Land of Longevity”. As one of the five bio-diversity bases of Chinese Academy of Sciences, it has the largest azalea garden and moss garden in Asia.
Dujiangyan City boasts two world heritage sites, one is the Dujiangyan Irrigation System which was built more than two thousand years ago and still functions properly, and the other is the Mount Qingcheng which is known as the legendary cradle of Taoism. With nine rivers across the city, the city is a perfect combination of mountains, water, city, forests, and weirs, which makes people stay in perfect harmony with nature. As a mixture of water culture and Taoist culture, the city has rich tourist resources. It has won the reputation of “China’s Top Tourist City”, “National Landscape Garden City”, “China’s Ecological Demonstrative Region”, “National Grade AAAAA Tourist Attraction” as well as “Historical and Cultural City in China”. Meanwhile, Dujiangyan gets the honors of “The Model of Habitat Environment Prize in China”, Dubai International Award for “Best Practices in Improving the Living Environment”, “The Best Charming City” and “The Land of Longevity”.
