Tongzhou Overview
Tongzhou is a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Nantong Prefecture city. The city has a physical land mass of 1,351 square kilometers and the population is 1.29 million. Under the jurisdiction of Nantong, Tongzhou City administers 20 towns and 1 provincial development zone. The municipal government is stationed in the Town of Jinsha.
Tongzhou has a warm but wet subtropical climate under the influence of the East Asia monsoon.
The city's territory was initially formed by merger of numerous isolated islets, shapped by sediment of sand particles brought by Yangtze River, during the South-North Dynasty (420-589 A.D.). In 958 A.D., Tongzhou was first established its township as a salt-making site in the Zhou Dynasty but changed its name many times in later dynasties.
As one of China’s top 100 cites and towns with regard of integrated economic strength over past years, Tongzhou was awarded the City with Good Result of Scientific &Technological Work and Sanitary City in China. Tongzhou is crowned with Hometown of Construction, a land flowing with milk and honey and Town of Textile Industry.
The city was a pioneer in the development of modern China’s industry, thanks to Zhang Jian, a great native and an industrialist in Tongzhou. With a fast-growing economy, Tongzhou is now becoming a flourishing portal city in national shipment network.
