Ulanqab Municipality Overview
Ulaan Chab ( Ulaɣančab; Chinese: 烏蘭察布; Pinyin: Wūlánchábù) is a region administered as a prefecture-level city in Inner Mongolia, China. Its administrative centre is in Jining District, which was formerly a county-level city. It was founded on December 1st, 2003, from Ulanqab league. Ulaan Chab city has an area of 54,491 km2. It borders Hohhot to the west, Mongolia to the north, Xilin Gol League to the northeast, Hebei to the east and Shanxi to the south.
At the end of 2004, Ulanqab had 2.7 million inhabitants, among whom Mongolians are 78,000, taking up 3.5%. Han Nationality has more population with other nationalities such as Hui, Manchu, Daher, Korean, Ewenki, Miao, Tibetan totalling 20 nationalities. Ulann Chab total area covers 55,000 Square Km. Since the 1990s, the old land of Ulanqab has received a new era. The performance of Market Economy offers an unprecedented developing opportunity to Ulanqab and opens a new world to Ulanqab.The western part of Ulaan Chab used to be part of the now defunct Chinese province of Suiyuan. Ulanqab is in the south of Inner Mongolia Plateau. It is for the most part mountain range, mainly Yinshan mountain. It is 1100—1500 meters above the sea level.
Ulanqab League includes 1 Municipality, 6 banners, 11 counties totally 18 County-class regions, namely Jining, Maominan, Siziwang, Tumote, Qahar, Fengzhen, Liangcheng, Helinger, Qingshuihe, Wuchuan, Zhuozi, Xinghe, Tuoketuo, Salaqi, Guyang, Wudong counties etc.
Being favorable location, the Ulanqab has more developed transportation. There are four railways named jing-Bao, Ji-Er, Ji-Tong and Feng-zhun in Ulanqab and crossing the municipality. A new high speed railway from Jining to zhangjiakou will be constructed soon. The total road opened to traffic has nearly reached 7000 km which has formed a transportation network in which the 110, 208 and Jing-Hu expressway as well as Hu-Hai road are the main road. The Jining, where the government body of the municipality is located, is a cross point and a communications hub which connects to North East, North China and North West and an important international channel to Mongolia, Russia and east Europe.
