Pinyin Form 1
English Form 1 (Abbr. Form)
The streets and roads in China are usually called xx Road (路Lù) , xx Street (街jiē) or xx Boulevard (大道 Da Dao). Reasons for their names are varied. Some roads are named after provinces/cities, such as Beijing Road , Nanjing Road in Shanghai. Some got their name from well-known buildings/mountains/rivers, such as Tianmushan Road in Hangzhou , named after the Tianmu Mountain; Changjiang Road in Shanghai, named after the Yangtze River /Changjiang River. Some are named after famous persons, such as Zhongshan Road. It is named in honor of Sun Yat-sen.
Most Frequently Used Road Name:
中山路: "中山" is the Chinese name of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the founder of Republic of China.
解放路: "解放" means Liberation, in memory of the conquering of the city by the people's Liberation Army around the year of 1949, usually the way the PLR had taken to enter the city.
环城路: "环城" means round the city. Usually the roads around the old city. From 1980's on,
most Chinese cities have expanded significantly to move the border of urban area far away from the former "roads around the city". In some cities, the roads around the old city(i.e. 环城路) are renamed as Inner Ring Road, or First Ring Road, and more ring roads, from inner to outer, from first to second, third and fourth..., are built one after another, like concentric rings.
