Jinchang Municipality Overview
Jinchang City is located in central Gansu province, west of the Yellow River, north of the Qilian Mountains, and south of the Alashan Plateau. The southwest of the city borders Qinghai Province and the northwest borders Inner Mongolia. The area is 8,896 km2. It has important archaeological sites from the stone age, a Western Han site, and sections of the Great Wall from the Han and Qing dynasties. It has one urban district and one county with a total population of 458,500; half of which is urban.
Jinchang city, founded in 1981, is a provincially administered industrial city. It is honorably named as the "China Nickel City" for it is rich in nickel. Our former national leader, Deng Xiaoping once called it "a city of gold" when he visited Jinchuan in 1960s. Then in 1992, the former President Jiang Zemin also paid a visit to Jinchang and dedicated it "the soaring nickel city". This vast, mineral-rich, especially nickel reserves ranked second in the world, in Asia, copper and diamond reserves ranked second, reserves of platinum group metals ranks first in the country. The city bears a dry continental climate in temperate zone. It is rich in sunshine. Spring is windy and the temperature is unstable.
