Shuangliu County Overview
Shuangliu County is a county in the southwestern part of Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province, China. Located approximately 19 kilometers away from downtown Chengdu, the county covers 1068 square kilometers and has a population of approximately 920,000. It is the home of Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport, the fifth busiest airport in the People's Republic of China.
Shuangliu was named Guangdu in ancient times, collectively called “three-du” with Chengdu and Xindu. Shuangliu was so named, on the one hand, to avoid the use of the character already used in the name of Emperor Yang Guang and, on the other, in honour of the famous line ofOde to Shuduby Zuo Si– “A convergence of two rivers”. As a county, Shuangliu boasts a history of 2,300 years with brilliant history. The county has long been considered the political, economic, and cultural centre as well as land and water transport hub and commodities distribution base since ancient times.
Shuangliu is home to luminaries, for example, the man of letter and statesman Wen Xuzhong of the Northern Song Dynasty; Fan Zuyu (deputy editor-in-chief ofHistory as a Mirror), Fan Zhen, and Fan Bailu of the Song Dynasty in Huayang; and the painters and historians Liu Xianrong, Liu Dongfu, and Liu Yubo as well as the prominent poet Qiao Dazhuang of the Qing Dynasty. Shuangliu is also the birthplace of Ding Diping, known as a martyr ofRed Cliff, Tian Jiaying, known as Mao Zedong’s secretary, and veteran member of the Kuomintang (KMT).
