As the provincial seat and also called Coconut City, Haikou is the political, cultural, economic and transportation center of Hainan province. Situated in the north of Hainan province, Haikou acts as a transportation hub and an important foreign trade port for Hainan province. The city has full service functions and transportation convenience with the Meilan Airport just 18 kilometers away from the downtown area. Major ports include Xiuying Port and New Port. Haikou can reach to every city or county in Hainan province by highway. Public transport is very convenient, extending to places in all directions. In 2008, Haikou’s GDP totaled RMB 44.318 billion, with a per capita GDP of RMB 23,919 against the permanent-resident population of 1.835 million.
