Dongcheng District is located in the east of Beijing. As one of the central districts of the Capital, Dongcheng District is an area which combines active politics, highly-developed trading service and culture tourism with plentiful resources. The widest point of Dongcheng District is 5.2 km and the longest point is 8.3 km, with a total area of 25.38 square kilometers. The registered population is 625,000. Tian`anmen Square, the symbol of the People`s Republic of China is in this district, where most important national political activities and celebrations are held.
Dongcheng District has a long history as a geographic concept of more than 700 years. Hamlets appeared during the Liao and Jin dynasties. In Jin Dynasty it was the northeast of Zhongdu. The approximate range of present Beijing Dongcheng District has been demarcated since Kublai Khan established Yuan Dynasty and rebuilt the capital, Dadu City. The capital was set in Beijing in the 19th year of Yongle in the Ming Dynasty (1421) and Dongcheng District had 15 lanes. In the Qing Dynasty, it belonged to Daxing County. Four troops, i.e. Flag of inlayed yellow, flag of pure white, flag of inlayed white and flag of pure blue, were stationed here. Imperial palace of Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties were all built in this area. During the yeas after the Qing dynasty fell, the area of the present Dongcheng District was the Inner one and Inner three districts. After the founding of PR. China, Dongdan and Dongsi districts were set up in 1952. In 1958, Dongdan and Dongsi districts merged and changed their names as Dongcheng District and had a new name – Dongcheng District. Dongcheng District has been an important component of countrywide political, economic and cultural activities, leaving a deep imprinting in the history of China.
