Overview
Handan is located in the south of Hebei province, neighboring with Taihang Mountain to the west and crossing North plain to the east. Bordering with Shanxi, Shandong and Henan three provinces, it governs one city, four districts and 14 counties, and is a famous national historical and cultural city.
Handan has a long history and splendid culture, with a lot of outstanding people here in history. Over 7000 years ago, there were human living here and till Shang Dynasty (1562–1066 B.C.) with the emergence of the early cities, Handan got to develop gradually; during Spring and Autumn Period Warring States time (770-221B.C.), Marguis Zhaojing of Zhao country moved the capital to Handan, which made it prosper soon and become the center of politics, military affairs, economy and culture. After the unification of Qing Dynasty (221-206B.C), Handan was listed as one of the 36 prefectures and in West Han Dynastry (206B.C-8), together with Luoyang, Zibo, Chengdu and wancheng, it ranked one of the well-known Five National Metropolis; afterwards, though with somewhat ups and downs, before 1930s, Handan was one of the key cities with a large area to the north of the Yellow River all though; during Sino-Japanese War and War of Liberation period, Handan was also where the Eighth Route Army No.129 headquarters as well as the governments of Shanxi, Shandong, Hebei and Henan provinces located.
Handan is an excellent national tourism city, with plenty tourism resources, including many famous scenic spots like Cishan Cultural relics, Wuling Congtai, Changshou Village, Jingniang Lake, Wudang Mountain, Fond Dream Fairy Lv’s Ancestral Hall, Wahuang Palace, Xiangtangshan Grotto, Martyrs' Cemetery of Shanxi, Shandong, Hebei and Henan, former site of No. 129 division headquarters of the Chinese red army soldier, etc.
